Fried Porcelain

conversations, sights, and thoughts as I make my way through China this summer

After a week and a half in China, we’ve concluded that a tourist can eat as much as he wants here—constantly even—but he’ll likely lose weight.  This has been the topic of discussion during several of our meals in the countless cheap eateries where you can choose from a menu of delicious rice or noodle dishes ranging from 3 to 8 yuan (50 cents to a little more than a dollar.)  A bit of a genius entrepreneurship from the last chat, courtesy of Jamie: Start a diet company that takes fat Americans to China for a lipid-trimming they’d likely earn it all back with the cheap living (and eating) in China.  They would eat their fill of mouth-watering cuisine, and their only sacrifice would be to replace the jumbo-size soft drink with a bowl of hot cabbage soup or tea.  After a summer of this, delighted patrons would come out maybe 10 pounds lighter.
